Voice Techniques for the Young Singing Actor

Thursdays, 4:00 – 5:00 pm. March 17th – June 16th.

Singing actors and music theatre enthusiasts aged 8-14 learn to ‘get out of their heads’ and ‘into the moment’ through Meisner Technique exercises, developing careful listening and sharp observation skills that culminate in the ability to improvise while accessing an authentic emotional life. This spontaneity and richness are then incorporated into composed text and music. The fundamentals of voice technique including projection, breath support, and lyric diction are introduced. Spoken and sung vocal warm-ups including straw and cup phonation are followed by performance-practice based repertoire coaching—students learn from watching and listening to each other as stagecraft and deportment are cultivated in mock performance/auditions. Class culminates in group performance of solo and ensemble music theater selections.

PLEASE NOTE: no class on 4/14, 4/21, 5/26. Performance TBD.

The contemporary practice of repeating a positive affirmation finds its ancient roots in Sanskrit music. These simple chanted melodies were composed to facilitate the crossing of the mind from the material world to enlightenment, and are considered a form of Yoga on their own. By singing or intoning mantras, you can cut through mental clutter and achieve many of the benefits of meditation. Scientific evidence has shown that vocal mantras can facilitate the release of secretions that strengthen our immune and neurological systems.

No prior singing or yoga experience is necessary.
